Simple Things

Maybe twenty years ago, maybe even a little longer ago than that, my sister gave a me a simple, ringbound scrap book to keep my recipes in….. how could either of us know it  would be my constant companion in the kitchen for the next few decades. In it, recipes for cakes and casseroles, playdough and pastries chronicle the life I have shared with my family and friends.  Pages torn from magazines, or photocopied from library books share the space with handwritten menus for Christmasses and parties long over. I delight over them and the little details of who brought whom and who brought what to all of those  delightful shared meals.

I could never have  guessed how much that little book would come to mean to me. Sometimes it really is the simplest things that bring you the greatest joy. I am going to be cracking open this little beauty and I hope some you might enjoy some of the pages that fall out as much as I do..

  2. Lovely looking book, I use a folder myself but my daughter wants me to make her a book with her favourite recipes. I'm looking around for a special book to use. I look forward to reading more of your blog.

  4. My mum has a note book that we have all sifted through for copies of our childhood favourites. Mum also gave me her fathers hand written book from the war when he was a cook in factories. I think these things become our family treasures.

    1. How lucky you are Colleen. I have a few things from my Auntie Rene. My mum was not a very interested cook

  5. When my mum died my sister was cleaning out her house as I was working at the time and lived an hour's drive away so wasn't able to help too much. I only realised after the house had been sold that she had thrown out mum's handwritten recipe book that I would have dearly loved but didn't think to ask her to keep it for me. My sister can't cook so it probably wasn't of value to her. It would have brought back so many memories. Sigh!

  6. This reminds me of an old green-covered exercise book that my mother has had forever. So many recipes, all handwritten in her distinctive way, so many recipes for our favourite meals and treats inside. I can't wait to see what you share from your own special book. Meg:)

  7. What a beautiful keepsake. I created a Family Recipe Binder for myself, each of my sisters and my mother, to keep much loved recipes in. My mother isn't a great cook, but she has some tried and true "comfort food" meals. Both my grandmothers were wonderful cooks, and I wanted to ensure that I wrote down their recipes before they got lost. I have never tasted a sponge cake as good as the one my grandmother used to make. Unfortunately, even though I follow her recipe to a tee, I haven't been able to replicate hers.

  8. I had kept the exercise book my mother had recorded her favourite recipe's in. When I moved from Brisbane the removalists managed to 'lose' a couple of boxes with books in them, so I ended up losing that collection of recipes as well as other recipe books that were so important to me.

  11. Hello, just popping in from Rhonda's. Great first few posts. I have started up my own book and I have just been thinking it is getting too big and I might need to have folders for different categories! My mum has one and I always remember the folder- vintage floral pattern in reds, blues and mainly yellow. It reminds me of my childhood. By the way, I really love the title of your blog. Beautiful. I look forward to reading more.
